STUDBOOK RULES ISSA REGISTRATION / STUDBOOK GUIDELINES
The International Sporthorse Studbook Australia Inc. (ISSA) provides a Sporthorse Register and a Sporthorse Studbook.
The following rules apply to these two registers.
General requirements:
All horses bred for competition in the Olympic disciplines of Dressage, Showjumping and Eventing are eligible to be entered into the ISSA Sporthorse Register and/or Sporthorse Studbook.
Thoroughbred, Australian Sporthorse, etc. will be recorded in the database and entered on the registration certificate.
The management committee of ISSA will publish a list of acceptable breeds. (see below)
Members wishing to register a breed other than those published may apply to the management committee, which will advise if the breed is acceptable for registration. (Note: during the early years of the association, members are encouraged to submit applications for registration of any breed which they consider suitable for the Olympic disciplines).
The breed must be declared by the owner and shown on the application for registration.
The owner must provide evidence of the breeding shown on the application for registration (this may be through a service certificate; and / or identity papers from another approved breed association; and / or blood typing; and / or DNA testing or other means acceptable to the management committee).
The owner must be a member of ISSA Inc.
The relevant fees must be paid.
Sporthorse Register:
The Sporthorse Register is open to all sporthorses which meet ISSA requirements. It provides a record of known pedigree and the “breed” of the horse.
Sufficient pedigree to prove the nominated “breed” must be provided (NB: a complete pedigree is not required).
There are no colour limitations or requirements.
The minimum height required is that height stipulated by the EFA for entry into Open EFA competition. (currently the horse must exceed 14:2hh or approximately 148cm)
Classification is not required.
Members may have their horse assessed in which case the results of the assessment (see below) will be recorded in the database and entered on the registration certificate.
Sporthorse Studbook:
The studbook is for breeding stock (mares and colts / stallions).
The horse must have at least three complete generations of proven and acceptable breeding for the “breed” nominated.
The minimum height for Studbook Registration is 158cm.
There are no colour limitations or requirements.
All studbook horses must be assessed (see assessment comments below).
A summary of the assessment scores will be recorded in the database and entered on the registration certificate.
A horse may be assessed more than once. The most recent scores will be recorded in the database and entered on the registration certificate.
Assessment:
Sporthorse Register horses may be assessed. Sporthorse Studbook horses must be assessed.
Horses may be nominated for assessment at any age from 3yo or older.
Assessments will be performed by ISSA approved assessors at approved assessment days.
Assessment marks will be awarded on a scale from 1-10 (where 10 is high). The standard is that expected from a Sporthorse competing in the Olympic disciplines of Dressage, Showjumping or Eventing.
Individual assessment scores will be given for Type, Conformation, Walk, Trot, and Canter.
A score of less than 5 in any one of these five parameters will preclude the horse from being accepted into the Sporthorse Studbook.
Jumping is an optional component. If jumping assessment is carried out then the score will be recorded in the database and entered on the registration certificate. (As jumping is optional, the score will have no effect on the horse's acceptance into the Sporthorse Studbook.)
Individual assessment scores will be recorded in the database and entered on the registration certificate. A total score / percentage will not be recorded
Approved breeds:
The following breeds have been accepted for registration with ISSA as separate breed categories. Members wishing to register a different “breed” are encouraged to apply to the management committee to have that breed added to the approved list.
A horse may be registered in only ONE breed category (e.g. An Arabian Warmblood may be registered as an Arabian derivative OR as a Warmblood OR as an Australian Sporthorse)
AUSTRALIAN SPORTHORSE: Horses of any breeding may be registered as an Australian Sporthorse.
WARMBLOOD: (note: specific types of Warmblood such as Holsteiner, Hanoverian, Arabian Warmblood, etc. will all be shown as Warmblood but details of their breeding will be shown in the pedigree).
Must have recognized and accepted Warmblood breeding within the first three generations of pedigree. The non-Warmblood component of the breeding must be either Thoroughbred, Arab or Anglo Arab.
THOROUGHBRED: Must be solely Australian Studbook (ASB) breeding.
ARABIAN or ARABIAN DERIVATIVE: Must meet the definition provided by the relevant breed studbook.
CLEVELAND BAY OR CLEVELAND BAY CROSS: Must meet the definition provided by the relevant breed studbook.
IRISH SPORTHORSE or IRISH SPORTHORSE CROSS: Must meet the definition provided by the relevant breed studbook.
